Opera North is breathing new life into the arts in the North of England, inspiring audiences, engaging communities and challenging preconceptions. Last year the company staged 300 operas, concerts, events and talks in over 25 venues, reaching audiences of over 200,000.
In Harmony is a national social action programme inspired by the Venezuelan El Sistema, which produced the renowned Simon Bolivar Symphony Orchestra. Its mission is to harness the power and pursuit of excellence in music to support children and communities facing challenging circumstances, to make positive changes in their lives.
In Harmony Opera North is based in Windmill Primary School, in Belle Isle, South Leeds and is proud to be one of six national programmes funded by Arts Council England and Department for Education. The programme was launched in December 2012, and the curriculum commenced in February 2013. 400 pupils and teaching staff play a violin, viola, cello or double bass – and as the only opera company delivering an In Harmony programme, Opera North champions excellence in singing alongside instrumental learning, already seeing the benefits associated with this.
While musical excellence and performance is core to this programme, its purpose is to radically change the life chances and opportunities of our young musicians, whatever paths they pursue in the future, and we believe that music will play a vital role in helping them develop as resilient, empathetic, creative, confident individuals.
